The Maverick of Natural Burgundy: Yann Durieux - 2022 Vintage Release

The Maverick of Natural Burgundy: Yann Durieux - 2022 Vintage Release

April 28, 2026Daniele Valoti

"Out with the magnificent 2022 vintage, Yann builds on an impressive streak which has slowly placed him at the very pinnacle of the natural wine scene."

Yann Durieux has perfected a unique recipe involving minimal intervention, focusing on extremely low yields and old-vine genetics. Having vinified his first vintage at the young age of 13, Durieux is something of a maverick. After training under the influential Henry-Frédéric Roch at his Domaine Prieuré Roch, Yann set off to craft his own path, free from appellations' rules and with a very clear idea of how to make wines that move you.

Now out with the magnificent 2022 vintage, Yann builds on an impressive streak which has slowly placed him at the very pinnacle of the natural wine scene. Those who have tasted some of his recent efforts know how serious these wines have become, especially at the top end, where the lengthy 24 months maturation on lees brings an insane concentration to the resulting wines.

We recently tasted the full 2022 range in London, and it was hard to pick a favorite. From the 1er Ponts Rouge up to the Jeannot, the 2022s are explosive yet elegantly structured, promising a very long life ahead. As for the whites, the concentration and verve of the vintage make for some truly memorable bottlings, starting from the electric Manon up to the “Montrachet of Natural Wine,” the Dame Huguettes DH Blanc.

For those who don't believe natural wine can age, you should ask how well Yann's MSD "Morey St Denis" 2012 was showing to those lucky friends who tasted these unicorn bottles with us at dinner.

Ex-Cellar Reservations are now open across the top-end range for this excellent Burgundy vintage chez Durieux.

Send us your wishes today for this total knockout of a vintage.

MORE ABOUT THE WINES

Premiers Ponts Rouge 2022

The Premier Pont comes from a strict selection of vines on the hillside facing the Abbaye, vinified in oak with long macerations for extra depth and caressing tannins. This represents the heart of the Domaine, and one of the best examples of how serious Durieux’s Pinots can be, without losing the pure, joyful drinkability of natural wine. Succulent and extremely rewarding.

Les Grands Ponts 2022

From ancient vines, the Durieux family acquired at the turn of the last century on the border between the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits and the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, near the Abbaye de la Saint Vivant of DRC fame. Yann Durieux has the privilege of working on this exceptional terroir with vines planted by his grandfather. At the pinnacle of the vineyard selection, the "Grand Cru" Les Grands Ponts is the outcome of a meticulous hand-harvest from the oldest vines facing the Abbaye. Only the best grapes for one of the most iconic wines of the Durieux family. Less than two barrels are produced per year. Upon tasting, vintage 2022 shows a focused, silky persona that threads on delicate nuances instead of sheer power. A top-pick for the cellar, especially for long term ageing (as proved by an epic 2012 bottle shared at dinner last year - a decade on, and still singing).

Les Boutieres BT 2022

From old vines located at the intersection of Savigny-Les-Beaune down from the hill of Corton, planted in loams and deep soil. Extreme depth hiding behind a shy personality, ready to explode with time in bottle. A very low-yielding vineyard despite its geographical location, making for one of the rarer wines in the range. Opens with a distinctive purity of fruit, before finely grained tannins reveals themself, carrying the layers of flavours through your tongue. A gentle beast, that will surely reward a year or two in bottle.

 Nuits-Saint-Georges "NSG" 2022

NSG is a brand-new cuvee from a small vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges, facing the village of Vosne. One can see the influence of Durieux’s time at Prieure Roch – a solid, expansive wine with layers upon layers of fruit slowly blossoming from the glass. While clearly built to last, the solar personality of this new vintage allows a glimpse in its bright future. At this early stage, it drinks particularly well, so much so it might be hard to keep. Get one to try before it shuts, and a few more to lay down. A future classic.

Pernand-Vergelesses "PV" Rouge 2022

Sourced exclusively from Yann's prime parcels in Pernand-Vergelesses, this bottling represents a highly selective, pure, and transparent rendering of Pinot Noir. Aromatically expressive, it offers layers of crisp red cherry, dried floral notes (rose), and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is defined by its taut structure and precision, leading with an uncompromising clarity framed by finely-grained, silky tannins. The lasting impression is one of saline minerality and a refined, discreetly potent character.

Jeannot 2022

The Jeannot is Yann’s top cuvee, coming from the finest selection from the Les Dames Huguettes vineyard. Made with only the best grapes harvested from the oldest vines, this in-vineyard selection yields a wine of heady perfume and stunning complexity. This is the quintessence of his family’s Domaine, made in honour of Yann’s grandfather, who pioneered the original plantings in this terroir. A rare Cuvee of the utmost beauty and purity. Tasted side-by-side with the more darker 2020 vintage, 2022 pours like silk in the glass. Graceful and bright in colour, it reveals itself with joy and confidence, without overpowering the senses. A vintage of balance, for pure drinking pleasure.

Manon Blanc 2022

An electric Chardonnay from old vines planted below the Abbaye de la Saint Vivant. Textured with a steely personality, this posses an almost eternal personality., keeping its focus and mineral-drive for decades. Personal tip from us, get it in large formats, as this is pure magic, especially for those who loves that hints of reduction that is all the rage right now in white Burgundy territory.

Dames Huguettes "DH" Blanc 2022

What many call the “Montrachet” of natural wine. Dames Huguette "DH" Blanc comes from Chardonnay vines situated at 500 metres, from Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru vines, on a limestone plateau. The soil is just 10-20 cm deep – in some places there is no topsoil at all – and the vines’ roots burrow deep into the bedrock. It was Yann’s grandfather who delineated this vineyard, and it was where Yann spent his childhood. Yann harvests this wine only when all the other wines are in the barrel. This late harvest gives such small yields that the resulting concentration is impressive. The 2022 confirms its status as a total head-turner, showing density and depth of flavour without any oak make-up.

Pernand Vergelesses "PV" Blanc 2022

A few rows of Chardonnay planted amongst Pinot Noir in PV. Extremely limited production of just one barrel per year. Rare bird from Yann, drinking particularly well right now. A loving harvest of glorious fruit, and it shows in the glass with a symphony of flavours. The niche pick in blanc.
