OUR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

DOMAINE GERARD MUGNERET
ECHEZEAUX GRAND CRU 2010 – 2017 VERTICAL
VOSNE ROMANÉE 1er SUCHOTS 2016

With cellars a stone’s throw from Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Domaine Gerard Mugneret lies at the very heart of Vosne Romanee, boasting prized holdings in the appellations’ finest terroirs. While sharing its back garden with such distinguished neighbour, and surname of the great Mugneret of Vosne, the Domaine has been flying under the mainstream radar almost since its inception. Being one of the first winemakers to agree on exclusive distribution in the US with the iconic Becky Wasserman back in the 70s, Domaine Gerard Mugneret became a darling of Burgundy collectors of the last generation, who happily kept securing their ex-cellar allocations, year on year, leaving almost nothing up for grab to newcomers.

Taking the reins of the Domaine in 2005, Pascal Mugneret is keeping alive the family love story with Vosne Romanee by looking at new farming techniques to preserve the vine genetic heritage found in the vineyards. Over the next decade, Pascal pushed the bar for quality, while exploring biodynamic practices. Herbicides and synthetic sprays were discontinued by 2010, with the use of herbal infusions to limit diseases across the vines. Increased biodiversity invigorated the soils, and promoted a metamorphosis in the vines. Healthy brunches with luscious foliage and increased space between the berries shielded the fruit from weather hazards, leading to perfect phenolic ripeness at harvest. In the cellars, extraction and fermentation took a more gentle approach, with extensive use of whole-bunch and less new oak, seeking wines of gourmand and vivid personality to savour over their lengthy life in bottle. In the last few years, sulphur levels have dropped significantly, and while technically these wines can be categorised as “natural”, they are very true to their terroirs, showcasing radiant fruit and elegant structure which is quintessential Burgundy in a glass.

To honour the great achievements of Pascal, and let you taste his enlightened approach in bottle form, we have managed to secure a rare collection of his sublime Echezeaux Grand Cru, coming from a single lieu-dit Les Quartiers de Nuits, as well as a few bottles of his outstanding Vosne 1er Cru “Les Suchots” in the lieu-dit Grands Suchots, shared with Lachaux.

Being true wine unicorns, rarely seen on UK shores, these bottles won’t last long so please do let us have your preferred order while stock lasts.

– THE CRITICS’ CORNER

“Pascal Mugneret has discretely made Domaine Gérard Mugneret one of the most sought-after producers in Vosne-Romanée. At present, he occupies that liminal point where he is well known and respected, but does not attract the obsessive following or price speculation of its blue chip names. How long that will last is another question and I am probably not helping by proclaiming just how good these wines are.” Neal Martin, Vinous

“ I have my tried-and-tested ports of call in Burgundy but every time I go I try to visit a few producers who are entirely new to me. I can’t remember one as immediately thrilling and convincing in terms of wine quality as Domaine Gérard Mugneret in Vosne-Romanée” Jancis Robinson

“ The unassuming but ambitious Pascal Mugneret is making terrific wines at Domaine Gérard Mugneret. Given the quality of the wines, it’s surprising that they’re not better known. In today’s Burgundy market, such anomalies don’t last long, so readers who aren’t following this address are encouraged to acquaint themselves with it in short order.” William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
