Château Ducru Beaucaillou: 1982 – 2006

Thanks to our very own négociant arm in the heart of Bordeaux, Wine Source is proud to provide exclusive access to the world’s greatest cellars. Our Ex-Chateau releases provide a solution to those seeking only the very finest bottles to enjoy at their apex, and understand how often bad surprises derive from improper storage or cork issues.

Considered by many a First Growth in all but name, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou has consistently delivered some of the most exciting wines from all Bordeaux. The beautiful stones from which the Chateau take its name form one of the finest terroirs of Saint Julien, a true Grand Cru site where Cabernet Sauvignon thrives. The impressive density and power of Ducru makes for extremely age-worthy wines in need of many years of cellaring so to reveal their exotic beauty and gentlemanly poise.

For those seeking the unadulterated expression of Ducru at its peak, we have partnered with the Borie family so to provide a vintage retrospective going back to the golden age of the 80s. Not only all bottles have been freshly labelled and packaged, but to avoid issues with cork taint, the family went even further and tasted each bottle from their library prior to recorking and thereby removing any risk for the discerning wine lover in search of the ultimate provenance and condition.

Today we present you Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou in all its glory. From cellar to table, exactly as the winemaker intended.

VINTAGE 1982
– £ 460 per Bottle (IB) –
William Kelley tasting for The Wine Advocate, December 2022
“From my cellar, the 1982 Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most youthful of the Médoc crus classés today. Unwinding in the decanter and glass with a rich bouquet of blackcurrants, licorice, cigar wrapper and loamy soil, it’s full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, with a broad attack that segues into a deep core of fruit framed by ripe, powdery tannins and succulent acids. It’s an unusually big-boned rendition of this elegant-styled wine, but it’s no less compelling for that.(96/100)”
Drinking Window: 2012-2042

VINTAGE 1986
– £ 215 per Bottle (IB) –
Lisa Perrotti-Brown tasting for The Wine Advocate, August 2020
“Medium brick in color with a touch of brown, the 1986 Ducru-Beaucaillou reveals growing notes of dried mulberries, kirsch and raisin cake with nuances of celery salt, dried bay leaves, truffles and charcuterie plus hints of old leather sofa and fallen leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has quite a powerful structure with firm, chewy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular, dried berries flavors, finishing long with a dried mint kick. (94/100)
Drinking Window: 2020-2040

VINTAGE 1995
– £ 315 per Bottle (IB) –
Lisa Perrotti-Brown tasting for The Wine Advocate, August 2020
“Medium to deep brick in color, the 1995 Ducru-Beaucaillou explodes from the glass with bombastic notes of Indian spices, plum preserves, fruitcake and dried figs with nuances of potpourri, star anise, bouquet garni and espresso. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of exotic spices and preserved black fruits, framed by firm, finely grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic impact and length. Mature and drinking well now, there’s still a good 12-15 years of kick left in this thoroughbred. (95/100)”
Drinking Window: 2020-2035

VINTAGE 1999
– £ 420 per Bottle (IB) –
Lisa Perrotti-Brown tasting for The Wine Advocate, August 2020
“Medium brick colored, the 1999 Ducru-Beaucaillou needs a little swirling to release the tightly coiled notions of dried cherries, fruitcake and red currant jelly with emerging hints of balsamic, mincemeat pie, menthol, powdered chocolate and star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate is wonderfully expressive with seamless freshness lightly lifting a great core of youthful red and black fruits plus fine-grained tannins to support, finishing with lingering savory and spice layers. This well-structured spice-bomb still has a lot of years left! (93+/100)
Drinking Window: 2020-2038

VINTAGE 2006
– £ 225 per Bottle (IB) –
Lisa Perrotti-Brown tasting for The Wine Advocate, August 2020
“Deep garnet in color, the 2006 Ducru-Beaucaillou delivers expressive Black Forest cake, blackcurrant cordial and chocolate box scents with touches of fertile loam, espresso, Marmite toast and black olives. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly played with vibrant fruit expression and a firm, grainy texture, finishing with a lively lift. (94/100)”
