Tasting Note
ANTONIO GALLONI
VINOUS.COM

“The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers presents the more intense side of Chambolle. Layers of dark fruit emerge from this muscular, deep wine. There is fabulous richness in the glass, along with some of the sheer structure that is typical of Bonnes Mares, the vineyard that sits just above. The Sentiers seems built for the long haul. Knockout aromatics linger on the finish.”

The vineyard
80 YEAR OLD VINES
“Les Sentiers”; the northernmost Premier Cru climat of the Chambolle-Musigny appellation in the Côte de Nuits. Continue north and you immediately cross over into Morey-Saint-Denis. Les Sentiers shares a border with Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru.

Chambolle-Musigny as a whole is known for its light, stony soils, but Les Sentiers has a higher proportion of clay mixed in with the limestone, giving a brown hue (Bonnes-Mares is more red). The clay gives slightly more effective water storage for the vines as well as greater access to minerals, which ultimately leads to denser, more powerful styles.

Groffier’s vines average 80 years old from just two hectares of vineyards that border Les Amoureuses on the north-east.

“Les Sentiers” is French for “the trails”, and denotes the paths that once ran throughout the vineyard.

2009 VINTAGE
2009 attracted considerable attention for its ripe, seductive personality. Many producers remarked about the ease with which the wines were made. At Groffier the fruit received a cold soak prior to fermentation which accounts for much of the trademark perfume this wine shows.
