Domaine du Clos St Martin, Menetou-Salon

For over four centuries, the Clément family has nurtured a profound connection to viticulture. Their winemaking legacy began in 1560 in Menetou-Salon and continues today under the stewardship of the 15th generation siblings, Anne and Pierre-Alexandre.

The history of Clos Saint-Martin dates back to 1650 when it was owned by the Priory of Saint Martin. In 1780, François Malfuson, a prominent court lawyer, writer, and pastor known for his dedication to Sancerre, acquired the estate. The subsequent generations of the Malfuson family were passionate winemakers. In 1929, a family of long-time friends of the Cléments took over, ensuring the vineyard’s preservation. However, after the passing of the last winemaker in 2016, the vineyard faced decline. It wasn’t until 2020 that the Cléments acquired the estate, which is now certified organic. Their commitment to sustainable agriculture goes beyond organic standards, exemplified by their initiative to sow plant cover in the vineyard rows.

This cover, a mix of complementary plants such as cereals and legumes, not only provides permanent grass cover to prevent soil erosion but also enhances biodiversity. When in bloom, it attracts pollinating insects, benefiting both soil health and the surrounding ecosystem. They also plant hedges and fruit trees around their plots.

The Clos Saint Martin vines thrive on steep slopes that can exceed 40%. The terroir is characterised by its remarkably small hard stoney soil, ‘caillottes’. These Upper Jurassic limestones, dating back 160 to 165 million years, feature layers of relatively flat white stones. This unique soil composition allows for excellent natural drainage, quick warming in spring, and heat retention during the day, which collectively promote optimal grape ripening. This geological uniqueness imparts a distinctive identity and character to their Sancerre wines, reflecting the true essence of terroir. Intensive clearing and planting have marked a fresh chapter for Clos Saint-Martin, as the estate reconnects with its winemaking heritage. The first harvest was in 2023, with each vine meticulously cared for to restore its former glory.
