” Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Haut-Brion is a blend of 53.6% Merlot, 35.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Cabernet Franc aging in 62.9% new oak. The nose is typically closed and broody, requiring a lot of shaking to wake up enticing notes of iron ore, red roses, lavender, mint tea, and forest floor, leading to a tantalizing core of plum preserves and blueberry pie. The medium to full-bodied palate is very tightly knit with vibrant black and blue fruit layers and red berry sparks, framed by very fine-grained tannins and a refreshing backbone, finishing long and minerally. A classic, breath-taking expression of Haut-Brion, I expect this to remain shy and restrained for the first 10 years so in bottle, and then watch it soar. “<\/em><\/p>\n Tasted April 2023<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n 97 – 99 Points ” The 2022 Haut-Brion comes across as a bit restrained, given the natural opulence of the year and the other wines in the Clarence Dillon portfolio. Deep and wonderfully layered, the 2022 possesses remarkable depth but also a bit less of the explosive energy that is such a Haut-Brion signature. I suspect that will come in time, as the 2022 starts to show quite a bit better with a little aeration. Violet, gravel, incense, leather, tobacco and scorched earth linger. Rich, deep and explosive, La Clarence is everything a second wine should be. In other words, a smaller-scaled version of the original. Sumptuous dark fruit makes a strong opening statement. Complicated notes of gravel, dried herbs, crushed rose petals and blood orange lend gorgeous savory nuance. Impressive. “<\/em><\/p>\n Tasted May 2023<\/p>\n – En Primeur Release Price –<\/p>\n 2 0 2 2 Cabernet Sauvignon 51.7% | Merlot 43.2% | Cabernet Franc 5.1%<\/p>\n B O T T L E S M A G N U M S 97 – 99 Points ” The 2022 La Mission Haut-Brion is composed of 51.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43.2% Merlot, and 5.1% Cabernet Franc aging in 62.2% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it tumbles out of the glass with gregarious notes of plum preserves, creme de cassis, and blueberry compote, followed by hints of sandalwood, violets, and licorice. The full-bodied palate is charged with energetic black fruits, featuring impressive tension and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing very long and opulent. Typically the more flamboyant sibling to Haut-Brion, it will be hard to keep your paws off this even after only 5-6 years in bottle. “<\/em><\/p>\n Tasted April 2023<\/p>\n –<\/p>\n 97 – 99 Points ” The 2022 La Mission Haut-Brion is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Dark, powerful and imposing, with compelling inner sweetness, La Mission is positively striking. The purity of the flavors is striking, but the wine’s statuesque personality might be even more impressive. Time in the glass brings out all sorts of savory and mineral notes that add complexity. The balance here is just mind-blowing. What a wine! “<\/em><\/p>\n Tasted May 2023<\/p>\n – En Primeur Release Price –<\/p>\n 2 0 2 2 B O T T L E S M A G N U M S 91 – 93 Points ” The 2022 La Chapelle de La Mission Haut Brion is a powerful, dense wine, almost shockingly so. Gravel, spice, leather, menthol and dried flowers give the 2022 tons of aromatic presence to play off a core of dark, red-toned fruit. I don\u2019t recall tasting a Chapelle with this much tannin in recent times, going back to the 2010. Readers will find a wine that delivers immense pleasure, though and tons of character. “<\/em><\/p>\n Tasted May 2023<\/p>\n – En Primeur Release Price –<\/p>\n 2 0 2 2 Merlot 58.5% | Cabernet Franc 41.5%<\/p>\n B O T T L E S M A G N U M S 94 – 96 Points ” A blend of 58.5% Merlot and 41.5% Cabernet Franc, aging in 38.9% oak, the 2022 Quintus has a deep garnet-purple color. It needs a little swirling to reveal notes of crushed blackberries, juicy blueberries, and black raspberries, followed by touches of pencil shavings, cinnamon stick, clove oil, and crushed rocks.
