Rhône, sweet Rhône - two announcements

In this season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, here at Wine Source we have been drinking the ripe, rich wines of the Rhône Valley and we are thrilled to say we have some announcements to make...

Thanks to our close, long-standing relationship with Domaine Henri Bonneau, we are proud to say that we receive the best allocation in the UK of these very special and incredibly rare wines.

Henri Bonneau was hailed by Robert Parker as “The Godfather of Châteuneuf-du-Pape”. Until his passing earlier this year, Henri made wines as they would have been produced 100 years ago, using methods that might have been familiar to any of the 11 generations of vignerons in his family who preceded him: low yields, late harvesting and no destemming, followed by long ageing for 6 or 7 years in ancient barrels. These traditionally-made, small-production cuvées are possibly the region's most coveted wines.

The domaine is tiny, comprising just a few hectares of old vines, mostly on “La Crau” - the best terroir of Châteuneuf-du-Pape. Its Grenache-dominated wines are seen as paradigms for the region, yet production of these magical wines is just a few hundred cases a year.

We are delighted to offer:

- Henri Bonneau Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011

- Marie Beurrier Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011

- Réserve des Celestins Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2011

The other big news is that we are delighted to announce our partnership with Domaine de la Janasse, a benchmark property in the Rhône Valley. This highly regarded estate is situated adjacent to the Auto Route de Soleil opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape, at the entrance to the village of Courthezon; it comprises 90 glorious hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône.  Christophe Sabon and his sister, Isabelle, manage Janasse; although their father is technically retired, he is still a visible as well as spiritual presence at this superb estate. The property has the rare distinction of being high profile yet wonderfully unaffected; it produces world-class wines that are consistently excellent every year.

As Robert Parker notes: “The consistency at this estate since the mid-1990s has been remarkable. Year in and year out, the wines, both reds and whites, are among the finest one will find ... anywhere! Domaine de la Janasse is one of the great winemaking estates of not only France, but of the world”

Mathieu Jullien, General Manager, Wine Source Europe said "Ever since I was a boy living in the Southern Rhone, I have loved the wines of Domaine de la Janasse. Importing them to the UK is a dream come true”

To celebrate this partnership, we are hosting a dinner at Cabotte on Thursday 27th October, where we will be serving back vintages of Janasse’s top Châteauneuf-du-Papes.  Please contact tom@wine-source.com and hamish@wine-source.com for more details.
